Arc Carrier bag & Postcards
Arc, Manchester, 2002
The Arc Gallery Store is situated in the Northern Quarter area of Manchester City Centre. This area is becoming more and more exciting, with many interesting shops, galleries and bars moving in, giving at a really lively atmosphere.
The
Arc Gallery Store combines a shop selling clothes by independent labels
and designers, books and unusual gifts with a gallery showing dynamic
work by both established and emerging artists. I recently approached
Arc with an idea for their bags. I wanted to bring the two elements
of the space together, by creating a new piece of artwork to be printed
onto the carrier bags given to customers when they make a purchase.
I liked the idea of giving instructions for how to carry the bag, suggesting
that there may be a right or wrong way (or cool and uncool way) of carrying
a bag. I developed this idea in to four key ways to carry a bag with
style. To coincide with the introduction of these new bags, we have
produced a set of postcards which can be picked up in the store.
This
project has been featured in the News/Radar section of Flux Magazine,
Issue 32: 'Stalwart independent fashion store, ARC, long linked to innovative
art projects has now given us even more reason to want to spend our
hard earned on their design originals. Teaming up with rising art star
Adele Prince, they've produced a limited edition range of carrier bags
featuring work by Prince in her usual instructional style. So, to improve
your image before you even get your clothes home go to 59 Oldham Street,
Manchester.' You can find out more about Flux Magazine and where you
