Commodity, Firmness and Delight
Globe Gallery, North Shields; Cube Gallery, Manchester; RIBA Architecture Gallery, London and The Lighthouse, Glasgow, October 2001-July 2002
I was asked to include the neon sign 'How to Use your Chopsticks' in this touring exhibition after the curators, Mark Daniels and Rashida Davison, had seen it in the Debenhams Windows exhibition. 'Commodity, Firmness and Delight', which was jointly commissioned by Globe Gallery and Northern Architecture, is inspired by the Japanese Love Hotel and is organised around the notions of reception, room and reward. It includes work by Shumon Bashar, Calum Stirling, FOBA, Bridget Smith, Hideshi Ide, Atsushi Tameda and Kyoichi Tsuzuki. So far, the exhibition has been to the Globe Gallery, North Shields and Cube Gallery, Manchester. At Cube, there was a one-day seminar on February 14, Valentines Day, where all of the artists were invited to talk about their work. This was a great opportunity for me to meet the other artists who had travelled from as far afield as Japan, and to hear about their work and ideas.
