Safety Instructions: DJ
Eat the Beat, St Nicholas Street, Bristol, May 18-June 8, 2002
This solo exhibition is in a record shop that is used by lots of DJs, so I thought I would take a look at the dangerous side of being a DJ. The work of a DJ can be quite risky, with the possibility of developing repetitive strain injury or, as I have called it, 'Turntablist's Wrist'. There are also other challenges such as paper cuts from rifling through vinyl, perforated eardrums, sleep deprivation and soreness of the neck from gripping headphones to the ear. I have produced a series of eight record sleeve sized images illustrating these dangers, and have displayed them amongst the record stands and tee-shirt racks in the shop.
