Instructions for a Slap Up Dinner

Parkingspace Gallery, Liverpool, January 2001

I heard about the artist run Parkingspace Gallery through an:magazine. Artists Lucienne Cole and Nick Sykes take derelict spaces and make them into temporary galleries and the space being occupied at that time was an old Chinese chippy in Liverpool's China Town. I became very excited by the prospect of creating work for this space and submitted a proposal, which was accepted. For this, my first solo exhibition, I looked at the way we use the Chinese chippy and created a set of instructions for eating chips and making chip butties. I also looked at how to use chopsticks and had a neon sign made, showing the correct way to hold chopsticks. Bringing the two elements together, I made a video showing how to eat chips using chopsticks. The exhibition was showing around the time of Chinese New Year and the celebrations and procession of the dragon took place right in front of the gallery.
